Installation: Driveway for parking area

The Fehmarnbelt Tunnel is one of Europe’s most ambitious infrastructure endeavors, connecting Denmark and Germany via an 18-kilometer (11.2 miles) immersed tunnel beneath the Baltic Sea. Upon completion, it will become the world’s longest combined road and rail tunnel, drastically reducing travel time between Copenhagen and Hamburg from 4.5 hours to just 2.5 hours.

The project is set to cost approximately €7.4 billions making it the biggest construction project in Northern Europe and is designed to boost regional development, trade, and cross-border connectivity.

In line with its commitment to sustainability and innovation, the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel project has tested visiBIT, a mycelium-based asphalt binder, to pave a driveway leading to the parking area at the construction site. Together with NCC Industry, the largest asphalt producer in Scandinavia, 3 tons of asphalt mixture was made in an industrial asphalt factory with visiBIT. This achievement marked the beginning of a new era for fossil-free pavements and demonstrated visiBIT’s potential in large-scale, high-profile infrastructure projects.
